High profile professionals from around the world will help to select the best creative news designs in the region. More than 400 entries from the Middle East region such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran and so on are competing for the coveted awards in the creative department in newspapers, magazines, infographics and illustrations categories. Winners will be announced shortly.

Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Adrienne Harebottle has been living in Dubai for the last five years. She has a background in fine arts and language practitioning, and has been involved in publishing, performing a dynamic role concerning illustrations, layout, writing and editing. She has worked across a variety of platforms and a wide host of titles. Adrienne has been commissioned for paintings and mixed media artworks.
Bob Dahm teaches design, illustration and printmaking at the American University of Sharjah and previously taught at Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore, and at a number of universities in the United States. His illustrations on social and political topics have appeared in hundreds of publications including The Boston Globe, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Education Week, and others. His research interests include visual narrative forms, traditional narrative and new design directions in the Gulf region, and application of new technologies to traditional printmaking.
Cristóbal Edwards teaches visual journalism and does research at Universidad Católica de Chile. He’s been an SND member since 1997 and serves as director of international relations.
In 2012 he was on a sabbatical in the US, Asia and Europe to pursue his interest in photography. He loves traveling and speaks several languages.
Duncan Mil joined the Sunday Times in 1971 while studying for his postgraduate degree. There he worked with editors Harry Evans, Peter Sullivan and Edwin Taylor, producing newspaper graphics until he was invited to set up a graphics department at the London Daily Mail.
In 1976, he left to become a freelance graphic designer and opened his own studio catering for most of the major newspapers in England. His graphics on the Falklands War for The Observer were syndicated internationally but at that time high costs and slow delivery time prevented the development of an international market. The advent of computers provided such an opportunity.
He guided the development of the Reuters News Graphics Service – designing its house style, locating and training artists until its launch in May 1990. The following year, he launched his own international graphics service combining his experience in the news industry with that in commercial work for advertising and corporate clients. The service now has subscribers in over 75 countries.

Hans Peter Janisch has been a newspaper designer and consultant to the newspaper industry since 1989. His work focuses on the redesign of existing publications, the creative layout and structuring of new products, as well as consulting on all issues pertaining to the visual appearance of a publishing house. Over the years he has designed numerous newspapers and weekly journals in Germany, Austria, Luxemburg, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Slovenia and many other countries. Next to the work of implementing creative design concepts Hans Peter is a lecturer at the Center of Journalism Haus Busch, the Journalist Academy and for the world organization of newspapers, WAN-IFRA. He served as International Director of the Society for News Design for over a decade.
Jan Schwochow is creative director of Golden Section Graphics and has more than 20 years experience in the industry, receiving many national and international awards for his work.
He graduated in 1996, with a Diploma in Design from the University of Applied Science Hamburg, and since then has gained experience as an information designer, designer and journalist. He was Head of Department and Art Director at Stern magazine, Germany, and Art Director for infographics at the publishing house Milchstrasse. He then went on to build up an infographics unit at KircherBurkhardt in Berlin, which he led for two years.
In January 2007, Schwochow founded his own infographic agency Golden Section Graphics. And in 2010, launched the first edition of the twice-yearly magazine “IN GRAPHICS” for visual people.
Schwochow is a member of the Art Directors Club Germany e.V. and of the Society for News Design.
Javier Errea is the Principal of ErreaCom, a design and media consultancy studio based in Spain. He has designed or redesigned more than80 dailies, magazines and websites around the world. SND has awarded some of his projects as World Best Designed. Most recently in 2013 Dagens Nyheter in Sweden. Before that i in Lisbon (2011), Expresso in Portugal (twice, 2010 and 2008), Eleftheros Tipos in Greece (2009) and El Economista in Spain (2007) were also given this award. Among his recent projects you can find La Nación in Argentina (2012), Les Echos in Paris (2012), Courrier International in Paris (2012), The Independent in London (2011), Jornal de Notícias in Portugal (2102), Malayala Manorama in India (2012), El Diario de Hoy in El Salvador (2011), La Tercera in Chile (2010), Liberation in France (2009), HBL in Finland (2008) or Al Bayan in Dubai (2008). Javier Errea is also the President of the Spanish Chapter of SND (SNDE) and regional director of Mediterranean Area. He is the chairman of the Malofiej World Infographics competition and summit. And he is Associate Professor at the University of Navarra.
Jonathon Berlin is a graphics editor at the Chicago Tribune. He is past president of the global organization Society for News Design (SND); previously, he served as the organization’s vice president and secretary/treasurer for the past two years. Before coming to Chicago in 2007, Berlin worked at the San Jose Mercury News, the Rocky Mountain News, and The Times of Northwest Indiana. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois’ journalism school.
Juan Velasco joined National Geographic magazine in 2005, and became the Art Director in 2008. He manages information graphics, maps and art. Previously, he worked for The New York Times and for El Mundo (Spain)
Juan has won over a hundred individual or team awards for visual journalism. He was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2000 as part of a team at The New York Times.
As a consultant, Juan has helped restructure graphics departments and taught workshops around the world. He co-teaches the annual workshop at the Malofiej graphics conference.
Karl Gude has been creating information news graphics since the late 70s. Karl spent nearly a decade as the Director of Information Graphics at Newsweek magazine and also held that position at the The Associated Press and United Press International wire services. He also directed the graphics departments at two large daily newspapers, the New York Daily News and the short-lived National Sports Daily.
Karl left Newsweek in 2006 after accepting a position at Michigan State University’s School of Journalism to create an information graphics program.
Laura Koot began her journalism career in the third grade when she served as classroom reporter for the school paper. Now she is the Managing Editor and Art Director of The National newspaper in the United Arab Emirates. In between, she worked as a reporter, columnist, copy editor, assigning editor, page editor, night editor, designer and presentation editor. She has helped launch two national newspapers: the National Post in Canada as well as her current labour of love in Abu Dhabi. She pie and bad jokes.
Lucie Lacava is a design consultant and a past president of SND (2001). She is a founding member of the francophone chapter of SND, based in Paris.
She founded her company Lacava Design Inc. in 1992, a firm offering visual strategies for print and digital media. Since then, she has given visual personality to more than 90 publications across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates. She has received more than 100 national and international awards in her career, including the SND’s “World’s Best Designed Newspaper” award for three of her projects.
Maher Al Johari is a syrian born designer based in Dubai. after studying fine art he began working in printing during 2003 to 2006.
He moved to Emarat Al Youm newspaper where he took the position as an Infographics editor. During his time he has won several awards, including an SND award along with his team.
Miguel Gomez has more than 20 years experience with design and redesign projects within Latin America, U.S., Asia, and Europe. Since 2006 he has been design director for Al Nisr Publishing Group in Dubai, owner of the award-winningGulf News, an English-language newspaper. The publication has been recognized with more than 100 design honors, including the first SND award for a paper in the Middle East.

PETER ONG is a newspaper consultant in Sydney, Australia. He was the long-serving regional director and board member of the Society for News Design, an international association of visual journalists. Peter has more than 30 years of journalism experience, having held various positions including that of senior Editor, Picture and Graphics Editor and chief sub. He is a regular speaker at international newspaper conferences including those organised by the Commonwealth Press Union, IFRA, SND, PANPA and the UK Newspaper Society. Peter has designed and/or redesigned newspapers and consulted for media organisations in 15 countries throughout the Asia-Pacific
Roberto Conseco studied Graphic Design at Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (UNAM) in Mexico City. He also did a course in ‘Introduction of Creativity’ at the Universidad Iberoamericana.
He began his work in the art department of Tower Records (Mexico City) and then moved to the daily, Reforma, in Mexico City, where he coordinated photo shoots. At Reforma, he was involved with concept development and design guidelines for Universitarios, a special section of the newspaper. He was creative coordinator for the front pages of weekly sections covering travel, food, lifestyle and fashion.
His next stint was at the newspaper, El Financiero, where he developed the concept and design guidelines for two thematic weekly sections on technology and sports.
At the magazine group, Netmedia, in Mexico City, he was in charge of illustrations and served as photo-artist for the technology magazines.
He moved on to the magazine, La Revista, a popular section published with the El Universal newspaper, where he was special section coordinator for fashion, food and travel.
Roberto currently works as Art Director of Khaleej Times newspaper, the leading English newspaper in the Middle East. He is based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
He heads a team of illustrators, designers and page-makers. He is involved with planning, conception and development of ongoing design initiatives covering the main pages, Wknd magazine, special sections like Diversions and Expressions, City Times daily tabloid; Indulge, a lifestyle quarterly and other special sections.
Rob Schneider is in charge of design, graphics and illustration for The Dallas Morning News. Rob has led successful redesigns of the DMN, The Providence Journal and various other print and digital products.
Previously, he was an editor, designer, writer, photographer, copy editor and sports editor for newspapers in Missouri (St. Joseph News-Press and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch) and Nebraska. (Omaha World-Herald) His work has been awarded by The Society of News Design, Malofiej, Communication Arts, Illustrator’s Annual, PRINT magazine and other state and regional journalism competitions. He’s also an exceptional butter carver, although he has long chosen to remain an amateur in this arena. Rob has been faithful and passionate servant of the Society of News Design since 1997. He has been a regular volunteer and a judge at the creative competition in Syracuse and a speaker and volunteer at three national workshops (Houston, Las Vegas and Denver). Rob has organized and hosted several SND Quick Courses in Texas and has been a featured speaker for SND and other organizations at events around the country.

Sergio Peçanha is an information designer and a graphics editor at The New York Times, where he creates information graphics for the Foreign section. He has worked on graphics about a wide range of subjects, Chinese politics, the Arab Spring and the Tsunami in Japan. Before New York, he was the graphics director of The Dallas Morning News, in Texas, and a designer at O Globo and Globo.com, in Brazil. His work has been recognized by the Malofiej, Society for News Design and Communication Arts.
Tiago Veloso is data visualization specialist. After more than 15 years working in almost every kind of Tourism business, from off-shore catering in Angola to snow resorts in Austria and ecotourism in Brazil, 2010 was the perfect time to bring those people-skills into the Social Media Marketing world.
The outstanding growth of Social Media Networks and services such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest and so many others opened a whole new universe of challenges and opportunities for the corporate world – specially the ones involving monitoring and managing that digital presence.
Also in 2010, I created Visual Loop, a blog about infographics and data visualization that grew up to be among some of the most respected in the industry. He was senior graphic designer and head of photo retouch department at Noun Magazine (An-Nahar Group), a monthly French women’s magazine, from 1997 till 2005, art director for Nahar Ashabab and An-Nahar newspaper. Kassis has also conducted courses and training workshops related to professional photo retouching. He is member of the Lebanese Graphic Design syndicate and has worked as a consultant art director on several projects with Knowledge View, Al-Bustan Festival and K4 workflow, and for various newspapers such as Al Sharq Newspaper, Awan newspaper and l’Orient-Le-Jour newspaper.
